018: Peter Robinson: Pair et Impair

Nous sommes heureux de présenter une exposition personnelle de l'artiste néo-zélandais Peter Robinson (né en 1966).

Connu pour son exploration critique des problématiques identitaires et ethniques, Peter Robinson réalise d'abord des ?uvres fortement politiques qui explorent ses origines Maori et la question du bi-culturalisme.

Plus récemment, Robinson est passé de cette rhétorique et du poids de son interprétation à un intérêt plus accru pour la matérialité des médiums qu'il utilise, tels que le feutre, le polystyrène et le fer. Un autre intérêt a également fait son apparition : le jeu. Entre ordre et désordre, densité et lumière, dispersion et compression, Peter Robinson n'a de cesse de créer des formes audacieuses, monumentales et irrépressibles où l'idée de sculpture est souvent momentanément prise entre le faire et le défaire. Au risque que son affection pour la matérialité soit appréhendée comme une profusion ou un excès.

Peter Robinson (né en 1966 à Ashburton, Nouvelle Zélande) a étudié la sculpture à la Ilam School of Fine Arts (1985-1989), il vit et travaille à Auckland. L'oeuvre de Robinson à été exposé aussi bien en Nouvelle Zélande qu'internationalement. Il a représenté la Nouvelle Zélande à la 49ème Biennale de Venise (2001), il a également participé à la 13ème Biennale d'Istanbul (2013), 11ème et 18ème Biennale de Sydney (1998/2012) et à la 8ème Baltic Triennale of International Art, Vilnius (2002).

L'oeuvre de Peter Robinson a également été inclus dans de nombreuses expositions internationales dont: Continental shift, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen (2000); Toi Toi Toi: three generations of artists from New Zealand, Museum Fridericianum, Kassel (1999); et Cultural safety: contemporary art from New Zealand, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt am Main (1995). Il fut également nominé pour le Walters Prize en 2006 pour The Humours at Dunedin Public Art Gallery, et de nouveau en 2008 quand il le remporta pour son exposition ACK à Artspace, Auckland.

We are happy to present a solo show by New Zealand artist Peter Robinson (b. 1966). For the occasion, the artist has produced a project specifically designed for the gallery.

With a practice spanning over two decades, Peter Robinson has continually varied his use of materials, techniques and the content he has been addressing throughout his career. Historically known for his critical exploration of issues of identity and ethnicity, Robinson's early works are intensely political and examine his Maori ancestry and biculturalism.

More recently, Robinson has shifted from this rhetoric and weight of interpretation to focus more exclusively on exploring and celebrating the materiality of the mediums with which he works -such as felt, polystyrene, and steel. Interested in the play between order and disorder, density and lightness, dispersion and compression, Robinson creates bold, monumental and irrepressible forms where the idea of sculpture is often momentarily balanced between building up and breaking down. Indeed, Robinson's affection for materiality is regularly experienced as profusion and excess.
